Wintertide, the Chilling Minecraft Mystery

A Minecraft Adventure/Puzzle Map Review By Acilper

(And probably the only one at that…)

Wintertide - A Chilling Mystery by Vladimyr

The Story:

You are a random stranger summoned to a small village by a mysterious letter, a plea for help it seems. You take your hot air balloon and travel to this small village, named Wintertide. As you stand there and take in the heavy snow, the eerie silence of the village is broken by the sound of doors slamming shut in the distance. Maybe you’re not as alone as you first though…

The Plot:

Simple enough, Wintertide is a small puzzle map where you play as a stranger to this town and search for clues to solve the mysteries that surround Wintertide.

The Map:

I love the simple, yet intricate design of this map. It runs like clockwork almost. There is a texture pack that goes along with it, and I suggest using that texture pack as it just makes the map look that much better. It was a wonderful map that had just the right amount of eeriness to it. There are also 6 Easter Eggs in the form of signs, which are not easy finds, and 25 Ghast Tears hidden throughout. Have fun trying to find them all!

The Ruleset:

  • This map requires you to play on ‘easy’ difficulty as some of the atmosphere of the game gets removed on peaceful. [This rule/setting right here is the only one I don’t agree with, I feel that the game actually loses some of it’s atmosphere when set to anything above peaceful, but maybe that’s just me]
  • Maps - Some of the maps you pick up may have objectives on them. So be careful not to throw any away you may need.
  • Render distance - Set your ‘render distance’ to normal (Please do not use ‘far’ as it tends to spoil the mood)
  • Volume - Set your ‘music’ down low but the ‘sound’ up high. There are a lot of noteblocks in this map and you may not hear them.
  • Brightness - Set your brightness down low (Having set too high may spoil the mood of the map)
  • Crafting - Crafting is allowed with any resourses you might find (Such as in chests).
  • And of course - The standard no breaking or placing blocks of any type (Unless asked/told/hinted at).

What I Experienced:

I played first using the Dokucraft Texture pack, and it looked nice, but not the same as when I went and replayed it with the texture pack it was meant to be played on.

The map had me on the edge of my seat without even showing me a monster. The atmosphere and the subtle tricks that the map pulled were enough to have me scared silly. It was a well set up puzzle, and the backstory of the village, (told through the notes), gave that whole village just another layer of that eeriness that the silence and emptiness already gave it.

There were so many things that had me going, “oh god, what was that!?” I just love it when a map can produce that sort of scare without the use of monsters. All I can say is the first time I saw the clock tower do it’s thing…

To be honest, I had to play through it more than once, as I missed items and got lost on what I had to do. This kind of killed the mood of the game as I knew what was going to happen when I did certain things.

But putting that aside, when I got to the end, it was a surprise I did not expect in the least. It was an interesting reveal and the very end had a nice treat as well. All I can say is that I would play this map again, and I’ve never found a map so far that I’ve enjoyed as much as this map.

Did you think I’d talk about a Minecraft Map like this and NOT share it with you guys? HA! Like I would do that. So, here they are:
